The History of the iPhone 3G
One year after the groundbreaking debut of the iPhone 2G, Apple released its second generation iPhone. Marketed as "twice the speed, half the price," the highly anticipated iPhone 3G sold 1 million units in the first weekend. One of the most exciting features built into the device was the iPhone 2.0 operating system that introduced the world to the App Store, giving iPhone 3G owners the opportunity to customize their smartphones with software programs. Although there were only 500 downloads available at the time of its launch, just ten months later, more than one billion downloads were accessed from the App Store.
iPhone 3G Features
Similar to its predecessor, the iPhone 3G retained its Samsung-built processor, 128MB eDRAM memory, a multitouch touchscreen display, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Eager customers were disappointed to discover the improvements did not extend to the 2MP rear-facing camera, which did not have flash, zoom, autofocus or video capabilities.
Yet, there was much to admire about the new iPhone 3G, including its integrated GPS navigation system, access to Apple's Mobile Me service and enhancements to the Enterprise Support software for business professionals. However, the most prized feature of the new iPhone was its 3G networking, which allowed data to be transferred twice as fast as the original iPhone. Sporting a slightly bulkier design, the black iPhone 3G was released with 8GB and 16GB of memory, while the 16GB version was also available in white.
When the iPhone 3GS was unveiled a year later, the iPhone 3G became Apple's budget model with a price tag that was half the original price. When the iPhone 4 was released, the iPhone 3 was discontinued. As of March 2011, Apple no longer supports the iPhone 3G with software upgrades.
