History of the iPhone 2G 8GB
Two months after the original iPhone debuted, an updated version was released. The iPhone 2G 8GB model went on the market in September 2007 to coincide with the launch of the iPad Touch. The improved iPhone not only included twice as much memory, but it also came with a $100 lower price point.
At this time, Apple discontinued the 4GB model, making the 8GB version its entry-level smartphone at $400. Two weeks after its release, the iPhone 2G achieved one million sales. Six months later, in March 2008, Apple released its highly anticipated Software Development Kit that allowed freelance developers to begin creating apps for the upcoming operating system.
The iPhone 2G 8GB smartphone witnessed a dramatic decrease in sales with the release of the 16GB version in February 2008. The entire iPhone 2G line was discontinued with the debut of the iPhone 3G in July, but by that time, the device had managed to sell a record-breaking 6.1 million units. Although the iPhone 2G 8GB no longer receives updates to its final iOS 3 firmware, third-party developers continue to produce custom firmware programs for the phone, including an Android operating system.
iPhone 2G 8GB Features
The iPhone 2G 8GB model was completely identical to its 4GB predecessor in its design and function. Standard features in the iPhone 2G 8GB included an innovative glass touchscreen that intuitively switched orientation and adjusted brightness, a 2MP rear-facing camera that employed a unique camera shutter graphic, an updated iPod player, widescreen video features, visual voicemail, the Mac Safari Web browser, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and AT&T's EDGE network.
Although the only upgrade made to the iPhone 2G 8GB model was an increase in memory, subsequent updates to the interface software, as well as yearly upgrades to the operating system, provided significant enhancements to the device. The release of iOS 2.0, which coincided with the debut of the iPhone 3, allowed the iPhone 2G 8GB to support third-party applications from the App Store, push-email and Microsoft Office attachments. Before being discontinued, the iPhone 2G 8GB was given a modified version of iOS 3.0, which included some of the new iPhone 3GS features.
