History of the iPhone 2G 16GB
Building upon its unprecedented success of selling more than one million iPhones since the debut of the revolutionary gadget in June 2007, Apple released a supersized 16GB model just five months after offering up an 8GB version that replaced the original iPhone 2G 4GB smartphone. Despite being saddled with a $500 price tag, $100 more than its current entry-level model, Apple devotees were eager to get their hands on an iPhone that offered four times the memory included in the first 4GB version.
Apple discontinued the iPhone 2G line in July 2008 when it released the next generation iPhone 3G. By the time it was retired, the iPhone 2G was in the hands of more than 6.1 million AT&T customers. Despite the lack of updates to its operating system provided by Apple, many independent developers continue to experiment with innovative firmware programs, with some even turning the iOS into an Android OS.
iPhone 2G 16GB Features
The only update given to the Apple iPhone 2G 16GB model was an increase in memory, but this upgrade was significant four times that of the original model. Like its predecessors, the iPhone 2G 16GB was equipped with an innovative glass touchscreen that controlled every function the smartphone performed. The display also included an accelerometer that sensed when the phone switched from landscape to portrait mode, allowing the integrated media player to broadcast widescreen videos.
The iPhone 2G was also marketed as Apple's most remarkable iPod player to-date. The touch display required the development of a new user interface. It also included higher quality video and audio functions, as well as integrated album cover art.
A Safari Web browser that supported real-time websites, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capabilities, visual voicemail stamps, threaded text messages, email support for four popular service providers and mapping features were all highly praised features included in the iPhone 2G 16GB. Updates to the operating system in July 2008 and 2009 granted access to numerous enhanced features, including push-email, copy and paste functions and the Apple App Store, which allowed customers to download programs to customize their iPhone.
