History of the BlackBerry Pearl 8120
Following up on the success of the hugely popular BlackBerry Pearl in 2006, both AT&T and T-Mobile released a new generation in the spring of 2008. Despite being saddled with a higher price point, the AT&T model lacked some important additions included in the T-Mobile edition, including access to the 3G network. Both carriers discontinued the BlackBerry Pearl 8120 two years after its release.
BlackBerry Pearl 8120 Features
Although the BlackBerry Pearl 8120 is identical in size and design to the original Pearl, with its small trackball and SureType keyboard, the newer 2008 model was upgraded to include Wi-Fi support with integrated security features. The T-Mobile phone added access to the 3G network and support for its HotSpot Home service, which allowed calls to be made over a wireless network and turned the device into a wireless laptop modem.
Available in cool titanium through T-Mobile and deep sapphire blue through AT&T, the new phone featured an updated HTML browser and an easily navigable interface. The T-Mobile version included an improved 2MP flash camera, which had been incorporated into the second generation AT&T Pearl 8110 model, while both carriers offered new video recording capabilities alongside a high-quality media player. Multimedia files could be stored on the 8GB microSD expansion slot and were easily transferrable using a USB cable.
Standard communication features for the world-roaming Pearl included text, multimedia and instant messaging, as well as voice-activated, smart and speed dialing. Both versions incorporated a new address book interface that allowed contact information to be grouped in separate panels. Like all previous generations, the BlackBerry Pearl 8120 was capable of syncing with a company's Enterprise server and real-time email could be delivered for up to 10 email accounts, which supported a spell check feature and attachment document viewer.
