History of the BlackBerry Bold 9000
As the successor to the 8800 series, the highly anticipated, first generation BlackBerry Bold debuted on the AT&T network in November 2008 after several long delays. Released as a rival to the trendy Apple iPhone 3G, the BlackBerry Bold was named by CNET as one of the Top 10 most popular cell phones of 2009. Although it did not have the same mass appeal as its competitor, the powerful handset was popular among mobile professionals.
A year after its release, the original BlackBerry Bold was demoted to the entry-level model when the second generation version was released. The smartphone stayed on the market for nearly three years before it was discontinued in May 2011.
BlackBerry Bold 9000 Features
Despite its rounded edges, the BlackBerry Bold debuted as a bulkier, wider version to accommodate the well-spaced, large QWERTY keyboard buttons. Packaged in an attractive black and silver shell, the textured leatherette backplate could be customized with different colors.
The shining star of the original BlackBerry Bold was its half-VGA display, which CNET declared the "sharpest, best-looking screen on any smartphone to-date." It also incorporated high-powered stereo-quality speakers, a 2MP camera and video recorder, as well as 1GB of onboard memory storage and a 16GB microSDHC external card slot.
The BlackBerry Bold was also the company's first HSDPA handset that offered global access to the high-speed 3G network. It also incorporated AT&T's EDGE network, Wi-Fi and dial-up networking to boost the speed of the full HTML Web browser, as well as Bluetooth. The updated BlackBerry 4.6 operating system delivered a new user interface, a high-quality multimedia player and exceptional messaging capabilities with up to 10 email accounts. The phone also supported DataViz Documents for viewing file attachments, while an upgrade to the premium edition allowed users to actually edit Microsoft Office documents.
